Safely Transporting Tanks
Written by Jerald Coffman
When a company sends a service person out to pick up a tank from a customer there are several steps that must be taken to ensure safe transporting tanks.
- Check the tank for leaks, dents and anything else that might make the tank unsafe during transport.
- When filling out the paperwork make sure to include the container’s size, serial number, service person’s name, and telephone number.
- Ensure that the tank doesn’t have more than 5% liquid in it. If there is more than 5% of liquid, bring the tank to the closest bulk plant facility so the excess liquid can be expelled safely.
- Wrap the tank all the way around with a sling that meets load requirements. DO NOT use lifting lugs to pick up a tank.
- Place the tank into a cradle to keep the tank legs off the truck bed.
- Secure the tank with a strap or chain to prevent movement.
Before a tank can be transported it must pass muster. You don’t want to be a danger to yourself and others around you while traveling from Point A to Point B. This is the responsibility of the service person that’s sent out to retrieve the tank.
