RegO LP-Gas Regulator Storage and Reuse

    Blue Rego Regulator

In its continuing quest for safety, REGO® publishes a series of bulletins explaining the hazards associated with the use, misuse, and aging of LP-Gas valves and regulators. It is hoped that these factual bulletins will make clear to LP-Gas managers and service personnel, that the utmost care and attention must be used in the installation, inspection, and maintenance of these products, or problems could occur which would result in injuries and property damage. This document is not intended to conflict with federal, state, or local ordinances or regulations. These should be observed at all times.

For Storage of New RegO Regulators:

    Red Rego Regulator

    • Store in original packaging.
    • Store in a clean dry area free from corrosive atmospheres of salt air or chemical pollution.
    • Keep away from electrical equipment
    • Keep properly sealed inlet and outlet opening with plastic plugs if supplied with regulator.
    • Store away from insects and rodents that can cause damage to bonnet cap, vent screen or diaphragm, and seat discs.

Storage of Used RegO Regulators - Removed from Service and Going to be Reinstalled in the Future:

    Yellow Rego Regulator

    • Store in protective packing (such as a plastic bag) cover the inlet and outlet with plugs or cover with protective tape.
    • Store in a clean dry area free from corrosive atmospheres of salt air or chemical pollution.
    • Keep Bonnet cap and vent screen in place to prevent the entrance of water, bugs, dirt, etc. Do not store or reinstall the regulator if the vent screen and/or bonnet cap were not in place when the regulator was removed from the service.
    • Keep away from electrical equipment.
    • Store away from insects and rodents that can cause damage to bonnet cap, vent screen or diaphragm, and seat discs.
    • Record the date that it was removed from the service. The regulator should be re-installed as soon as practical.
    • The first stage and twin stage regulators installed on ASME/DOT containers (undercover and/or vent downward) may be left connected to the pigtail and service valve, provided the service valve is off, and the regulator outlet is capped or covered.

    For Reinstalling Used RegO Regulators

    Small Red Rego Regulator

    • Inspect regulator per recommendations found in the most recent version of the RegO L-500 and L-102 catalogs this includes the body/bonnet and springs for any signs of corrosion or other damage to the regulator.
    • Check date code (date of MFG) for the age of regulator – the recommended service life of RegO regulators manufactured after 1995 is 25 years (except single stage which is 15 years).
    • Verify that the vent screen is in place and clear.
    • Install regulator(s) in conformance with NFPA Pamphlets 54 and 58, and all other applicable codes and regulations.
    • Install a new copper pigtail on the first stage and integral twin stage regulator(s) if the regulator has been removed.
    • Install with vents openings pointed down or under protective cover so their operation will not be affected by the elements (freezing rain, sleet, snow, ice, mud or debris).
    • Perform system pressure/leak test including the regulator (s) per NFPA 54 and NFPA 58.
    • Test regulator for proper lock-up and flow pressure.
    • Make sure the bonnet cap is hand-tightened securely.
